Green Art News: Plastic

My love affair with the ocean began as a  child on the beaches of Puntarenas, Costa Rica.  In 2004  I suffered head trauma that effects my short-term memory to this day, but I do remember riding horseback with my older cousins along the shore.   The sounds of hooves splashing in the water, along with waves crashing along the rocks, and the smell of  the ocean air were the things I looked forward to the most.  Playing in the sand, and bringing  home seashells that would become my most treasured toys as a young child.

My father tall, and lean his eyes the lagoon blue of the ocean; would place conches against my small ear at bedtime so that I could hear the sounds I fell in love with. My father was an American, a POW from WWII, upon returning home to the states he traveled and spent much time in Central and South America.  He met my mother, a dark and exotic server at a local restaurant in Costa Rica and fell in love.  After they exchanged their vows, he spent the next five years in various locals in Costa Rica before returning with his wife and daughter to Southern California.  Where I was raised and my love for the ocean continued.  The beaches much more crowded than what I had been introduced to.  The feel of  crisp ocean air, and the warmth of the sun on my  skin were less frequent;  but nonetheless were what I looked forward to.

Today those beaches in Puntarenas are a far cry from what I remember as a child.  The fishing industry and tourism has taken its toll.  I have included some informative material about the effects of plastic on  our coastline in Ecology of Marine Debris.  I also have included links to Artists who have devoted their work in the recycling of this debris in creating whimsical works of Art.

May peace and prosperity greet you at every corner.

The Start of my Artist Book

Book Art Handcrafting Artists’ Books

I purchased a book on artists’ books by Dorothy Krause and I really enjoyed looking at it. The photos are inspirational and the techniques covered I had already done in the past for different projects, but the instruction was easy to understand. This time I wanted to start and finish a project for me. This book will be the base of inspiration for my artist book, and I think I shall gift it to my brother who I miss this pandemic has been the impetus for isolation of all sorts, and the act of giving in any form can only add to one’s emotional well-being.

This weeks prized find

The photographs are exquisite there are many examples to peruse and I can’t say enough about this book. I bought it for a couple dollars a real steal, and I’m having a good feeling that what comes of it is going to be something exciting. I just took a Domestika course by Susanna Domínguez Martín on the same subject matter how to create something that will house your art project in a way that will conserve it and present it adequately.

Bright beautiful colors
Easy to understand instructions

I decided I would start an abstract watercolor and use collage, and letter art to express myself. I have been doing junk journals for awhile now and I wanted to work on something that will encourage me to experiment and free myself. Sometimes I’ll find artist block comes for me when I’ve been creating but it feels more like work and not play. So I thought I would bring you along on my journey until it’s completion. It’s been along while since I’ve blogged and I do miss it!

Abstract watercolor landscape in progress

I decided I would start with an imagined landscape using Prima pan watercolor set ‘Currents’ a lovely set of marine colors. I may or may not use Tracie Fox’s digital kit ‘wallpapers’ as collage materials and some vintage pages from a 1965 (my birth year) American College dictionary. I haven’t worked with sumi in a long long while so I’m thinking of bringing my paintbrush “Bobosoy” and my ink out. Old friends i haven’t played with in a long while.

I think that is a good start, and I’m excited enough to share my triumphs and pitfalls with you all. So onward George let’s play.

Unique, one-of-a-kind, Keepsake Journal

Japanese-Inspired Junk Journal Ephemera

I found the picture of the horse first. I loved the look of Japanese drawing, and woodcut its dramatic and it calls out me. How to present it..that didn’t come as easily. Do you ever just spend hours just staring at a piece wondering..where it’s going to go? Whatever it was had to have a fragment of vintage Japanese fabric from the pile of scraps.

Something masculine, something strong. I think it’s ultramarine blue deep, camel, black and taupe as close as I could guess. Some rice paper, texture, calligraphy, and one thing leads to another. Horse portraiture or still life’s in Japanese culture made sense horses were popular in art as in life. Equally necessary in the military as for the aristocracy in the area of horse polo and hunting. 🧐 hmm i need to know more. 😝 Salutations stay safe.
